PHOTOS. Tartu Science Night brought together more than 300 people

Last Friday over 340 visitors of all ages were welcomed to Biomeedikum for the first time ever, for Tartu Science Night.

During the event, which was part of Brain Awareness Week, visitors were invited to learn about the work of Professor Allen Kaasik, Professor Anti Kalda and Dr Miriam Hickey. Visitors met faculty and students, viewed exhibitions and science demonstrations and took part in quizzes and games.

The organiser of the event, Dr Hickey, said that they wanted to help demystify the brain and to show the people of Tartu their work on fundamental understanding of cell function, addiction and diseases such as Parkinson's disease. “We want to thank everyone who came. We were delighted to meet so many people and to hear their stories and their questions. One of our goals was to create a space for our visitors to talk about neuroscience in general, and many people left very interesting questions on our question board.“

Answers to questions from Science Night visitors about neuroscience will be added to this page over the next week.

Dr Hickey hopes to make this an annual event. “All of our faculty and students were inspired by our visitors’ curiosity about the brain and our science. The great success of our event shows that the people of Tartu want to hear about our science and we are excited to make our next event even better.”

Hickey added that they were impressed by the entries for contests. „Our judging panel have a very difficult task as there were so many amazing entries.”

Contest winners will be announced on March 27.
