Tartu Science Night 2025
We welcome all science enthusiasts to the Tartu Science Evening on March 13–14 at Biomedicum! On the first evening, you can attend fascinating lectures, and on the second, explore the laboratories of the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Medicine and participate in science demonstrations. Entrance is free for everyone – bring the whole family!

13th March: Lectures (Ravila 19-1006)

Maie Toomsalu: "Back to our Roots: Exploring the Birth and Evolution of Pharmacology in Tartu"
In her lecture, Maie Toomsalu will show how Pharmacology, the science of how drugs work in the body, began right here in Tartu! The lecture will be held in Estonian.
We invite 10th–12th grade students attending the lecture to participate in a news article competition. To enter, students must write a news-style article based on Maie Toomsalu’s lecture, "The History of Pharmacology in Tartu". The best works will be published on the Tartu Science Night website, and the authors will be awarded prizes!
Article Requirements:
- The article must be in the format of a news story and up to 500 words long.
- The word count includes: the headline, lead paragraph, main body, and conclusion.
- If a photo is used, its caption must also be included in the word count.
- The news article can be written in Estonian or English.
- The article must be uploaded here as a PDF by March 20th.
- Please include the author’s name and email address (not counted in the word limit).

Professor Anti Kalda: "How drugs of abuse impact the brain"
What happens in the brain when a person becomes addicted? What happens when drug use is stopped? Why might people start using again? These questions will be answered in a lecture by Professor Anti Kalda (Professor of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology), as he presents his recent research on brain changes associated with drug addiction. The lecture will be held in Estonian.
