Medical faculty’s anniversary programme changed

The Faculty of Medicine will celebrate its anniversary on 15 and 16 October with a revised programme and schedule.

The scientific conference will take place on 15 October as planned, providing the most up-to-date information about the fields of research of medical scientists, students, medical residents and doctors. Like in previous years, the conference will be held in Biomeedikum but if necessary, a web conference will be organised. This year, the results of nearly one hundred research studies have been submitted to the conference, to be communicated to everyone interested via oral or poster presentations. Also, the traditional booklet of abstracts is published.

The thematic conference, which was scheduled for 16 October, will be postponed by a year. Instead of the dean’s reception and gala dinner, an award ceremony will be held on that day to recognise the best speakers of the scientific conference and present the medals of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Tartu. If the situation in autumn does not allow gatherings, the award ceremony can be followed online.

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Margus Lember admitted that although it is difficult now to predict the autumn situation, organisers must be prepared for the possibility that they cannot host an in-person event.

“The anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine has been a regular, traditional meeting place for the community, alumni and partners of the faculty. As we know the value of the event, the decision to change its format and cancel the thematic conference and the gala dinner was a complicated one. However, the decision had to be made now as the organising of anniversary events requires early planning. I sincerely hope that everyone rates their health as more important than any event, and we can take pride in our faculty’s scientific achievements also in other ways and using virtual meeting places,” Lember said.

The conference is organised with the support of the Doctoral School of Clinical Medicine of the University of Tartu and financed by the EU European Regional Development Fund (University of Tartu’s ASTRA project PER ASPERA).
